The AI Vertical: How the Promise of AGI Became an End in Itself

The modern AI industry operates under a curious inversion: rather than developing technology to solve specific problems, it has positioned itself as the inevitable solution to all problems while working backward to identify what those problems might be. This isn't technological progress in the traditional sense—it's the construction of a self-sustaining vertical that feeds on its own promise of eventual transcendence.

The New Orthodoxy

"Adopt AI or be left behind." This has become the unofficial motto of our technological moment, delivered with the certainty of natural law. But who exactly decreed this imperative? The answer reveals the first layer of the AI vertical's self-serving structure: the companies building AI systems have also appointed themselves as the arbiters of what constitutes progress and relevance in the modern economy.

Unlike previous technological revolutions that emerged to address clear, pressing needs—antibiotics for infection, automobiles for transportation, telecommunications for distance communication—the AI revolution has inverted this relationship. Instead of "here's a problem, let's build a solution," we're witnessing "here's a powerful technology, let's find problems for it to solve" followed immediately by "and everyone must adopt it or become obsolete."

This represents a fundamental shift from technology as a means to an end toward technology as an end that generates its own means of perpetuation.

The AGI Mirage

At the center of this vertical sits the promise of Artificial General Intelligence—a secular eschatology that functions as both carrot and stick. AGI serves as the ultimate justification for continued investment, talent acquisition, and market positioning, while remaining conveniently undefined in terms of concrete outcomes or success metrics.

Consider the circular logic: we must pursue AGI because it will solve all problems. Which problems? The problems that require AGI to solve. How will we know when we've achieved it? When it can solve all the problems we can't currently solve. The reasoning is perfectly closed, requiring no external validation or specific deliverables.

This vagueness isn't a bug—it's a feature. A clearly defined goal with measurable outcomes would create accountability and, eventually, completion. The AGI promise, by contrast, can be infinitely deferred and redefined. Today's "breakthrough" becomes tomorrow's stepping stone toward the real breakthrough that's always just around the corner.

The Vertical's Architecture

The AI vertical has constructed itself as a complete ecosystem that benefits primarily from its own existence. Consider the key components:

The Companies: A small number of entities control the most advanced capabilities, creating artificial scarcity around what is fundamentally mathematical computation.

The Infrastructure: Cloud providers and hardware manufacturers benefit from the computational intensity, regardless of whether the applications provide genuine value.

The Talent Market: A new class of specialists whose expertise is valuable precisely because the technology requires specialist knowledge, creating a professional caste with vested interests in the technology's continued centrality.

The Investment Apparatus: Venture capital, research funding, and public investment all oriented around the presumption that AI represents inevitable progress rather than one possible technological path among many.

The Regulatory Capture: Government bodies and policy frameworks increasingly organized around managing AI rather than questioning whether AI adoption serves public interests.

Each component reinforces the others, creating a self-sustaining system that grows stronger regardless of its external impact.

The Dependency Model

Traditional technological progress often involved transferring capability to users—teaching people to read transferred the capability of information processing, automobiles transferred the capability of rapid transportation, personal computers transferred computational capability. Each technology ultimately made its users more capable and independent.

The AI vertical operates on the opposite principle: it maintains central control over capability while creating ongoing dependency relationships. Organizations don't acquire AI capability—they subscribe to it. They don't become more independent through AI adoption—they become more dependent on AI providers.

This isn't an accident of current technological limitations. It's a deliberate business model that ensures the vertical's continued relevance and profitability. True capability transfer would be economically suicidal for companies whose value proposition depends on maintaining their position as essential intermediaries.

The Perpetual Pursuit

Perhaps most tellingly, imagine if AGI were actually achieved tomorrow. What would happen to the AI vertical? The most likely scenario is an immediate pivot to the next undefined goal: "super-AGI," "aligned AGI," "democratized AGI," or whatever terminology maintains the pursuit.

Because the vertical isn't actually oriented toward solving external problems—it's oriented toward sustaining itself as the presumed solution to all problems. The goal isn't to reach AGI; the goal is to maintain AGI as an eternally receding horizon that justifies continued investment in the pursuit itself.

This reveals the essential nature of the AI vertical: it's not a means to an end but an end that continuously generates its own means. The promise of eventual transcendence serves to justify present-day resource extraction and market positioning.

The Real Questions

None of this means AI technology lacks genuine applications or value. But it suggests we should be asking different questions: Which specific problems does this specific AI application actually solve? What would success look like, and how would we measure it? Who benefits from adoption, and who bears the costs? What alternatives exist, and why are they being dismissed?

Most importantly: Who decided that AI adoption is mandatory for continued relevance, and what interests does that mandate serve?

The AI vertical has successfully positioned these questions as illegitimate or naive—as evidence of "not getting it" rather than reasonable inquiries about resource allocation and technological priorities. This positioning is itself evidence of the vertical's self-serving nature.

Real technological progress solves problems people actually have. It makes users more capable, not more dependent. It succeeds by improving specific outcomes, not by convincing everyone they need to adopt it or be left behind.

The AI vertical's greatest innovation may be convincing us that the pursuit of artificial general intelligence is itself a form of progress, regardless of what it actually produces along the way.
